Daiga Queens football team climbs the county league
The Daiga Queens, the girls football team that is sponsored by The Safari Series, is rising the county league tables to come out on top in Laikipia West, East & North.
The Safari Series donated kit, balls, a goal net and money towards the girls transport between matches and therapy sessions with the trained therapist this year so both the Mugumo village boys and girls football teams could play other teams from the region.
The teams provide support, activity and friendship to young people from the village, many of whom face extraordinary challenges from their circumstances including lack of education, teenage pregnancy and mental health issues. In one shocking statistic, the majority of the girls team spoke out in the therapy sessions of the common occurrence of sexual harassment, rape, teenage pregnancy and having sex for money in order to be able to buy sanitary items for their monthly periods.
We are looking to support the teams next year with boots, socks, more kit and more training kit. If you our any of your family are a member of a football team and could help us to collect kit for 34 girls and 36 boys between the ages of 10-16 years old, please get in touch.
Or support us in raising $350 to buy 34 reusable sanitary pad kits at a cost of $10 per kit. PadMad (founded by previous guest Madhvi from Nairobi) manufactures and distributes biodegradable menstrual pads made from Kenya-grown cotton, designed to last up to five years and minimises environmental impact. Additionally, PadMad educates and empowers adolescent girls through menstrual hygiene management training.
