A full tummy, a brighter future: feeding 350+ children at Makurian Primary School

At Makurian Primary School, a simple meal can make the difference between a full classroom and an empty one. On the days when lunch is provided, attendance triples. More than 350 children come through the school gates, ready to learn - and to eat.

For many, that school lunch is the only meal of the day, and almost always the only hot one. When the cooking pots are full, lessons are focused, energy levels are high, and the atmosphere around the school feels alive. When the programme pauses, attendance drops sharply, and teachers see the immediate impact on concentration and participation.

Moon’s Camp guests often visit Makurian to engage in the Community Visit, founded and run by the Women’s Group of the area. In recent months, we welcomed a family from the UK who ran a company which outfits British schools with the neccessary arrangements to allow them to fuction successfully. The family were particularly interested in visiting a school in the area to learn more the challenges the school faced on a daily basis. The incredible meeting between the family and the Head Teacher has blossomed into a beautiful friendship and a cross-continent partnership which means the children are supported through school lunches, and beyond.

Feeding the school isn’t a single, daily motion - it’s about partnership. It keeps children learning, supports families, and strengthens the community from within. At Makurian, a meal is more than just lunch - it’s what keeps education possible.
