Feeding 126 children in Kipungani School - food coming from far, filling local stomachs!
January has been a whirlwind, and with the start of term our School Lunches Programme is officially back in action.
This year marks an important step forward as the programme expands to a second, new school, reaching 126 children at Kipungani Primary School - the closest local school to Chuchungi House. Behind these numbers are real lives, real classrooms, and a daily opportunity to make learning possible.
Providing healthy, nutritious, and hot school meals is about far more than food. For a child, a proper meal means concentration, energy, and the ability to engage in lessons. It means fewer distractions from hunger and a far better chance of learning, growing, and thriving.
Delivering these meals on Lamu Island is never simple. Kipungani Primary School presents particular logistical challenges, as food in and around the island is both expensive and limited. To make the programme viable, supplies were sourced from Malindi and transported by truck, then loaded onto a dhow - a traditional Swahili sailing boat - before finally being delivered by donkey to the school kitchens. A long and complex journey, all to ensure children receive a warm, nourishing meal at school.
It is a reminder that meaningful work is rarely easy. But when the outcome is children who are fed, focused, and able to learn, every step of the journey is worth it. Huge thanks to everyone involved in making this programme possible - your commitment, creativity, and determination continue to change lives, one meal at a time.
