Why Lamu is know as the 'Island of Festivals' and why staying at Chuchungi House means you can enjoy the fun!
Think Lamu is just a sleepy beach destination? Think again. This island may be known for its turquoise waters, dhow sailing, and laid-back charm, but scratch beneath the surface and you’ll find a calendar full of vibrant, unique events that bring the community and visitors together all year long.
Here are just a few reasons why there’s always something exciting happening on Lamu Island:
Lamu Cultural Festival – Held 28th - 30th November 2025, this festival is a dazzling celebration of Swahili heritage. Expect traditional dhow races, poetry readings, henna art, live music, and delicious Swahili cuisine. It’s a perfect window into Lamu’s soul.
Lamu Yoga Festival – in 2025, the festival is between 31st October - 4th November and it's when yogis from around the world flock to Lamu to practice in serene settings with the sound of the ocean in the background. With dozens of classes offered in beautiful beachfront and rooftop venues, it’s a true wellness escape.
Shela Hat Contest - started by Lamu local Herbert Menzer and occurring in mid-February, the festival celebrates the creativity of the town through hats! Locals show off their design skills through their head creations, using anything they can find including coral, feathers, flowers, palm leaves, coconuts and even things others may consider garbage!
Lamu Donkey Pageant – Yes, really! Usually in July or August, this quirky and beloved event highlights the central role donkeys play in island life. With decorated donkeys and cheerful parades, it’s as heartwarming as it is unforgettable. Created by the husband of our House Manager, Yaye, we consider the Donkey Festival to be one of our very own!
Lamu Maulid Festival – Taking place in October (date dependent on the Islamic lunar calendar), this deeply spiritual event commemorates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. It’s a moving display of faith and community, featuring traditional music, dance, and religious gatherings.
New Year’s Eve Celebrations – Say goodbye to the year and welcome the next in true Lamu style - with Swahili drumming, dancing, fireworks, and festivities that last well into the night. Our very own Kipungani beach is also alight with fun and festivities, making it a great place to see in the new year.
So whether you're a foodie, a yogi, a culture buff, or just someone looking for something more than the usual beach escape, Lamu offers a rich, immersive calendar of experiences. There’s always something happening - and from Chuchungi House its easy to enjoy the fun and partying, but then retreat to the peace and quiet of our house and beach!
