Daiga F.C.: The Community Football Club Building More Than a Team in the Lolldaiga Hills
Daiga F.C. is a community football club from Mugumo, the village closest to Moon’s Camp in the Lolldaiga Hills of Laikipia, Kenya. Many of its players have spent recent months building our new Family Tent by hand. The club now plays in the County League, and its new kit, training equipment and footballs were paid for through the Community Fees included in every Moon’s Camp stay.
Builders by week, footballers by weekend
For much of this year, a group of young men from Mugumo has been working at Moon’s Camp as casual labourers, shaping the mud walls of our new Family Tent. It is slow, skilled, physical work, and the walls carry the marks of the hands that built them.
When the weekend comes, the same men swap their work clothes for football kits and head to the pitch. That commitment is showing in the results. Daiga F.C. has risen to the County League, putting it among the stronger sides in Northern Kenya and giving Mugumo a team to rally behind.
How guest Community Fees support Daiga F.C.
Every guest who stays at Moon’s Camp pays a Community Fee as part of their safari. It is a small line on a booking, but its effects are concrete. For Daiga F.C., those fees bought the kit the players wear on match days, the equipment they train with and the footballs they play with. Without that support, competing at county level would be far harder for a village side.
This is what responsible tourism looks like in practice: money from visitors reaching the people who live closest to the places they visit, and being spent on things those people value.
Why a football club matters in the Lolldaiga Hills region
The value of Daiga F.C. goes well beyond the scoreline. In the Lolldaiga Hills, paid work is limited, particularly for young men, and there are few places to meet, socialise and spend time together. The club gives its players friendship, fitness and a weekly structure, along with a shared sense of purpose and belonging.
On match days the impact spreads further. Families, neighbours and friends turn out along the touchline, and the team becomes a point of pride for the whole of Mugumo.
What community means at Moon’s Camp
We believe that being part of a community means more than being located in it. It means creating work, supporting local people and making sure tourism gives something back to the place it depends on. Watching the young men who built our Family Tent walk out to represent their village is one of the clearest examples we have of that connection.
